Raku Tozan Porcelain Peach Vase, 1920-30
This bulbous vase with a short neck and flared rim tapering to a base on the foot, decorated in relief with a naturalistic design of a fruiting peach in copper red and green, all on a finite yellow ground, Height 10.125 inches, Widest Width 8 inches, Diameter of Rim 4.75 inches, Condition excellent with no restorations, cracks, chips, or hairlines, signed on the base with the engraved mark "Tozan," together with the original tomobako storage box reading "yellow-glazed flower vase," and "heian tozan saku" translated to made by Tozan of Kyoto, c. Taisho to early Showa Period, c. 1920-30. It is questionable as to whether this vase was actually made in the studio of Miyanaga Tozan I as the style is consistent, and Tozan did produce ware in other ground colorations aside from celadon. However, the engraved mark on the base is a non-traditional M. Tozan mark. An alternative possibility is that it very well might have been made by Raku Tozan Jibei of Kyoto who produced ceramic ware during that same period.
