| This rare molded okimono, by the Imperial Court Artist, depicts a child sambosa dancer in a seated position, his feet underneath protruding at the back, his hands clasped over his mouth, dressed in a stylized hat and dressed in a traditional garment, in colors of iron red, green, blue, black, and gold gilt, all on a creme colored earthenware crackled glaze, Height 4 inches, Width 2.25 inches, Depth 2.125 inches, Condition is excellent with no restoration, cracks, chips, or hairlines, impressed mark MAKUZU on the base, together with the original Tomobako storage box signed and red sealed by the artist, made in the MEJI PERIOD, c. 1900-10. MIYAGAWA KOZAN I (1842-1916) - together with Seifu, one of the two most important artists of the MEIJI PERIOD. Honored as the second ceramic artist, in 1896, to be designated an Imperial Court Artist, Kozan was specifically noted for not only his objects depicting naturalistic designs in porcelain and earthenware, but also his molded ware, in various medium and coloration, which are quite rare in this form, and also in the blue and white and Chinese wucai style. These type extraordinary molded pieces were in limited production, and amounted to only a small fraction of the output of the Kozan studio.
