The classic effigy pottery jar by Mojave Indian artist Elmer Gates was made in 1971 and is in perfect original condition. Standing 6 1/2" tall and 5" diameter, unsigned. Elmer Gates, 1929-1990, was famous for his refined pottery making skills, elevating Mohave pottery above the century of primitive wares for which the Yuman groups were known. Beautifully decorated with white seed bead jewelry and two blue Padre beads on earrings. Buyer pays $20.00 for shipping and insurance. Mojave and Maricopa pottery was collected by Bert Carlson of Scottsdale, Arizona, a major collector of Indian artifacts of Arizona. He began acquiring his art in about 1966, buying in galleries and at auctions and from other collectors. At the age of 92 in 2010, he divided up his collection among his three children, from whom we acquired this pottery. |
