Navajo/Paiute Indian Pitch Covered Olla
Large water jug is woven of sumac and coated inside and out with pinon pitch for water proofing. Braided horsehair lugs are intact.

Made by Navajo and Paiute weavers up in the Four Corners area of Arizona in the old traditional style, to be used as a canteen. To create a design, the weaver dyed some wefts turquoise blue which appear darker and green creating a peaked triangular pattern. This is very unusual!

This neat old basket was purchased new in 1966 at the Northern Arizona Museum Navajo Show of 1966.

Standing 9" tall and 7 1/2" across, the condition is very good, some pitch loss on the bottom.

Buyer pays $15.00 for shipping.
