Helen Cordero Singing Mother Storyteller
Wonderful Singing Mother by Helen Cordero, the original artist of the Storyteller form. Helen Cordero, Cochiti Pueblo Indian, b.1915-d.1994, created the first storyteller pottery figure in the late 1950s. She was the inspiration for generations of potters in her Pueblo and all the others. Rising to prominence in the 1970s, her large Grandfather storyteller was featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine in the 1980s. No pottery collection is complete without one of Helen's "people".

This lovely female seated figure is 9 3/8" tall. A baby peeks out from the blanket wrapped over her shoulders. Dressed in the traditional black manta and high topped moccasins, the painted details include her sash and a crucifix at her neck.

The condition is quite good for a piece from the 1970s. All the tiny spots are spalling, pop outs from the clay, including the one on her foot. This was original to the piece when purchased from Helen at a Heard Indian Fair in the 1970s. Easily repaired or left as is.

In our 40 years we have only had a few Mother figures by Cordero, mostly she made figures representing her Grandfather, the original Storyteller.

Buyer pays $30.00 for shipping.
