Large Cochiti Drummer figure by Helen Cordero, the original artist of the Storyteller form.
Helen Cordero, Cochiti Pueblo Indian, b.1915-d.1994, created the first storyteller pottery figure in the late 1950s. She was the inspiration for generations of potters in her Pueblo and all the others. Rising to prominence in the 1970s, her large Grandfather storyteller was featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine in the 1980s. No pottery collection is complete without one of Helen's "people". This large seated figure is 12 1/2" tall. A child sits on his knee as he plays his drum. Dressed in the traditional plaid shirt with a folded blanket over his shoulder, the painted details include his sash, his long hair and a pueblo necklace. Signed. The condition is quite good for a piece from the 1970s. All the tiny spots are spalling, pop outs from the clay, but very minor. This large figure was purchased from Helen in the 1970s. The Drummer figure is said to represent her husband Fred, who was a drummer and a drum maker at Cochiti Pueblo. Buyer pays $50.00 for shipping and insurance. |
