Vintage 1950s hand-wrought copper cuff bracelet signed by Casa Maya, a Mexico City based taller, with a cloisonne style bull head applied on its face, decorated in green enamels. A signature piece for Maya, also pictured in Sandy Hargrove's recent book on the subject, showy and definitely intense. The cuff's inner circumference is 7 1/4" long (including the 3/4" gap) and its width varies between 2 5/8" in the front and 1 3/4" in the back...

Based in Mexico City, Casa Maya was a taller about which not much was known until about a year ago, Sandy Hargrove published a book on their jewelry. Yet the relative scarcity of information did not seem to affect the popularity of Maya pieces since they masterfully combined copper and brass with enamels, stones and ceramic beads in innovative, some times crazy designs...

Based on a design by the eccentrically creative Hubert Harmon, a vintage brass repousse cuff bracelet, all hand-wrought with excellent patina and an endearing figural design. I believe the two intertwining sea creatures might have been inspired by some Mexican piece of folk art (Harmon's famous mermaids design was created after an escutcheon in one of Taxco's old mansions that Spratling rennovated in 1928). Exquisitely made and having acquired a fantastic patina over the years the vintage Deco Chinese brass necklace offered here boasts a multitude of floral charms in graduated sizes. Framed by perfect brass circles the charms are covered in sky blue, cobalt and iron red enamels - even the clasp is embellished with a floral and geometric motif! Beautiful, old Chinese craftsmanship that is very difficult to emulate today... Measuring 18 1/4" long by 3/4" wide (width of the circular links)...

Showy, quite spectacular and definitely mod in its design and so characteristic of the 1950s return to copper and brass jewelry, I suspect that this necklace is in fact a Casa Maya creation though it's missing the company's name. Based on a Hubert Harmon design, it boasts graduated trapezoidal brass links with pronounced copper domes in their center. I love the black velvet cord in the back, which I believe to be the necklace's original...
