Huge bejeweled sterling silver pendant necklace, obviously inspired by Matilde Poulat's Cross with Doves design.
Though made in the post-1980 period, this is a piece carefully and lovingly hand-crafted in the old Taxco way and is en par with the best emulation of Matl jewelry that was produced when the big maestra was still active.
Amethyst, red coral and turquoise , channel and bezel-set; extensive wirework and twist rope ornamentation; and beautifully crafted repousse doves flanking the cross elevate this pendant to the realm of simply unbelievable jewelry!
The chain that accompanies it is ealier Mexican, from the pre-1980 period, all hand-crafted and a perfect match for the pendant - it you think it's too long for you, just have your jeweler take out a couple of links...
Measuring 3 1/4" long by 2 3/8" wide the cross pendant will hang 3 1/2" off the chain; the chain itself is 29 1/4" long (wearable) and set's combined weight 29.2 grams.
The pendant is signed "ME-02" (one of the few post-1980 silversmiths that Bille Hougart lists in "The Little Book of Mexican Silver" deeming his/her work worthy of mentioning - see p. 266) and "CEL" "925" "STERLING MEXICO"; the chain is also marked with Eagle 3 and partial maker's and location hallmarks.
The set is in excellent vintage condition with no stones missing or broken, exquisite repousse and perfect patina. Please note a couple of very light impressions in the back of the cross only
