An astounding piece not only for its superbly crafted, big pendant but also because of its entirely hand-made "cage" chain this is an early Taxco masterpiece wrought in 960 silver. Signed by a listed maestro about whom not much is known, it bears old hallmarks in raised lettering and is adorned by beading, overlay and a beautifully carved, dimensional jade mask. I particularly like the two applied hummingbirds below the mask - the detail in their feathers is incredible matched only by their crispness and strong sense of motion. The chain itself, made of thick silver wire shaped in interlocking "cage" links perfectly matches the pendant in style and proportions. A rare, early Taxco treasure... Measuring 2 3/8" tall by just shy of 3 1/8" wide the pendant will add a 2 7/8" drop to the chain. The chain is 20" long (wearable 19 3/4") and each link is 1/4" wide. The necklace's weight registers at 63.6 grams and it is signed with maker's conjoined initials "SP" as well as "TAXCO 960" a total of three times! Dating in the 1930s, it is in excellent vintage condition and a truly rare find.
