|Breath-taking not only because of its size but also due to the powerful movement in the design, this is an early Deco repousse horse brooch bearing the signature of Casa Prieto. A "manufacturer of silver articles", as described in a 1946 guide (cited in Bille Hougart, Little Book of Mexican Silver, p. 36), Casa Prieto was based on Avenida Juarez in Mexico City and their jewelry can be easily distinguished for their size, their powerful repousse and heavy yet crisp castings. Distinctly Deco in its minimalism the brooch at hand glistens with the patina of time that made the recesses in the repoussage darker and emphasizes its three-dimensional quality. Truly stunning piece and an early Mexico City classic. The brooch measures 4 1/4" by 2 1/8" and weighs 20.1 grams. It is hallmarked with maker's signature "PRIETO AVE JUAREZ 40" and "SILVER D.F.", all in early, raised letters and dates in the 1930s-40s. In excellent vintage condition but please note that when I acquired the brooch the roll-over was missing from its clasp so I had that part replaced and it's now secure and fully functioning.|
