| Renowned for its carved stone mask jewelry the Los Ballesteros taller created a series of pin/pendant combinations that are avidly collected for their fine carving and the elaborate sterling headdresses that the figures wear. The golden sheen obsidian example at hand illustrates in the best possible way the beauty and craftsmanship those pieces exhibit. Paired with a substantial Taxco link chain of the same period, if not earlier, the brooch can be worn as a necklace but can easily be dis-attached so you can enjoy it as a pin as well. Measuring 2 1/8" tall by just shy of 2" wide (at its widest) the brooch weighs 30.7 grams. The chain is 27" long and weighs 24.1 grams bringing the set's combined weight up to 54.8 grams. Signed as shown with the taller's conjoined initials and Eagle 12 (for the brooch) and "TAXCO 925" (for the chain) the pieces date in the 1950s-60s (the chain might actually be from the pre-1948 period). In excellent vintage condition with just a tiny nick on the back of the obsidian mask; it doesn't show in the front, is superficial and probably a side-effect of the setting process. | ||
