PERUZZI SILVER LAPIS Glass NECKLACE DELLA ROBBIA INFANT
Adorning the Ospedale degli Innocenti, which was built by Brunelleschi around the middle of the 15th c., Della Robbia's "swaddled babies" were installed later but date from about the same period as the hospital. One of them even became the symbol of the American Academy of Pediatrics as the "bambini" came to be identified with the care and protection of infants. The double strand necklace offered here has has two silver links that depict a Della Robbia infant. The rest are executed in fleur-de-lis and floral motifs and interrupted by graduated in size lapis art glass beads. Though not signed, I have no doubt in my mind that the necklace is a Peruzzi piece - the quality of the cast links supports the attribution and it was not unusual for Peruzzi not to put their hallmarks on chains. I actually suspect that this necklace might have started its life as a one-strand, continuous long chain until a previous owner decided to have it converted to a two-strand piece. Wear it as is or have your jeweler take it back to its original form - it's an easy and very inexpensive conversion. The necklace as it is measures 17 1/4" (the length of the shorter, inner strand). Its total length is 35" and it weighs 53.4 grams. The lapis beads vary in diameter between 1/2" and 1/4". Unsigned as mentioned above, tests positive for silver and is probably .900 if not sterling. Dating in the 1910s-30s and in excellent vintage condition.
