CASA MAYA THE KISS MEXICAN COPPER BRASS ENAMEL BELT
Based in Mexico City, Casa Maya was a taller about which not much was known until about a year ago, Sandy Hargrove published a book on their jewelry. Yet the relative scarcity of information did not seem to affect the popularity of Maya pieces since they masterfully combined copper and brass with enamels, stones and ceramic beads in innovative, some times crazy designs. Often referred to as "The Kiss", the buckle in this leather belt consists of two mirrored faces (possibly based on a portrait of King Pacal of Palenque). Made of hand-hammered brass and copper and adorned with vibrant green enamels they almost touch lips as they face each other and have a huge tear-drop repousse dangle hanging off them. Measuring 7 1/4" wide and 5 3/4" long (including the dangle) the buckle is attached to a leather belt approx. 28" long (wearable) with the possibility of being adjusted up to 30"-30.5". The belt itself is 1" wide and black in color. Though not signed (I haven't taken the belt out to check the areas concealed by it) this is a guaranteed Casa Maya piece. My experience over the years is that though mostly meticulous, the specific taller did not always stamp all pieces in a parure. The buckle dates in the 1950s and I would suggest that the belt is original to it. In excellent vintage condition with some truly minor wear to the hunter green enamel at about halfway into the hairdo of the figure on the right (as you look at the photos).
