SOLD - Thank you!
Based on the fact that Casa Maya reproduced several of Hubert Harmon's design in copper and brass, Sandy Hargrove in her book on the taller's work suggested that the company must have had the designer's permission to do so. Whatever the case, I would say we should be thankful for the co-operation since it makes it today possible for some of us to enjoy a well-made piece of jewelry or accessory in one of Harmon's quirky designs without having to pay the truly high prices his signed pieces command. The brass, amethyst and woven leather belt at hand is guaranteed to start conversations and just so much fun to wear and to behold. The whale's body exhibits strong repoussage done in brass with copper accents and deeply colored amethyst cabochons. The brass rings interrupting the lengths of leather facilitate the fastening by allowing the heart-ended brass hook to slide in them. The belt's wearable length is approx. 34" and can be adjusted down to 27 3/4". The whale is 4 1/8" long by 1 3/8" wide (at its widest) and with its leather dangle will add a 6 3/4" drop to the belt. Signed "MAYA" on the back of the whale and in excellent vintage condition, it dates in the 1950s.
