|Pectoral necklaces are, in my opinion. one of the most stunning forms in vintage Mexican silver jewelry and I count Gerardo Lopez as one of the best maestros who applied themselves to making them. Though there is not much information on him in the extant literature (at least of what I have seen), I suspect that he must have had some kind of association with the Los Castillo taller and/or Margot de Taxco. His repousse is strong and very carefully executed though lighter in weight usually and his designs are often either based on or variations of jewelry found with the signature of those famous workshops. The necklace here has an almost Art Nouveau feel about it with the repoussage emitting a sense of constant flow as the lines of the design twist and twirl. Eye-catching without being overwhelming the way pectorals can be some times, this is an easier to wear piece and perfectly crafted. It measures a wearable 17 1/4" long but I feel it will wear like a necklace slightly longer due to the curve above the meeting point of the two central links. Those two links together are 3 7/8" long and 1 5/8" at their tallest. The width at the chain is approx. 5/8" and the piece's weight registers at 61.1 grams. Signed with Lopez's name as shown as well as "980 TAXCO" and bearing Eagle 23, it dates in the 1950s-60s and is in excellent vintage condition.|
