MOD MEXICAN SILVER AMETHYST CLAMSHELL BRACELET
I am really fond of these "clamshell" modernist bracelets that came out of Taxco in the mid-1940s and 1950s! In fact, I am very partial to the whole line of jewelry in that design - from necklaces to rings to pendants, brooches and earrings. I find them very eye-catching, definitely different and so representative of the modernist wave that overtook Mexican designers and silversmiths alike around the middle of the 20th c.. The bracelet here has a cluster of smaller than usual "shells" holding generous teardrop amethyst gems in their tendril-like prongs. The stones are almost diaphanous, with beautiful inclusions and striations in them and the patina the silver has acquired is just what you want to see on a piece of jewelry that has lived well-loved and taken care of. With an inner circumference of 7" the bracelet is 1/2" wide on either side of the shell cluster and goes up to 3/4" at the hinge. The cluster itself is approx. 2" square and the piece weighs 60.4 grams. It is signed with maker's initials "CAR" as well as "MEXICO TAXCO 925" and dates in the mid- to later 1940s. In excellent vintage condition with great patina and beautiful stones.
