Early Sigi Pineda combination pin/pendant necklace from the first years of his independent career, when his taller was still called "Plateros". Nested in a biomorphic concave "shell", the minimalist figure of a man playing a green stone drum (at least to my eyes) hangs from a tube link chain. The work has Sigi's abstract design signature and exudes a raw animism that catches the eye and the imagination. The pin/pendant measures 1 3/4" tall by 1 3/16" wide (at its widest) while the chain itself is 20" long. The necklace weighs 36.8 grams (19.7 grams for the pendant) and it is signed "PLATEROS TAXCO" as well as "STERLING MADE IN MEXICO". The chain is not marked but guaranteed sterling and more than obviously Mexican as well. Plateros was founded in 1952 yet this piece does not bear an Eagle assay mark which to me leaves two alternatives: it was either stamped on a removable tag that got lost a long time ago or Sigi was creating pieces that he signed "PLATEROS" before 1948. At the latest, the date on this set should be between 1952-1955. In excellent vintage condition with great patina.
