|Maximiliano Mondragon's work does not surface very often - in fact, it's a rather rare and fortunate occasion if one bumps into jewelry bearing his signature. I am therefore very happy to be able to present this heavy, beautifully worked necklace in a "fertility knot" design accompanied by a set of matching earrings in the same motif but earlier and by a different maker. Mondragon started his career very early at Spratling's Las Delicias and the few examples of his work that I have encountered over the years have been emulations of the big designer's work. The necklace at hand is carefully hand-cut out of thick silver sheet, deeply chased and oxidized with perfect finishing. It lies divinely around the neck in a warm, intimate way. This is an assembled set; the earrings are earlier, I believe, and not signed for maker at all - yet they are a very good match for the necklace. Measuring a wearable 15" long (actual length is just shy of 15 1/4") the necklace is 5/8" wide and weighs 84.4 grams. The earrings are 7/8" square and their weight is 9.3 grams (for the set). Mondragon's attributed initials "MM" are marked on the necklace along with Eagle 1 and "980 TAXCO MEXICO STERLING" while the earrings are simply marked "SILVER MEXICO". Dating in the 1950s for the former and in the pre-1948 period for the latter, and in excellent vintage condition with fantastic patina and no flaws noted.|
