Seiho Takeuchi Mongoose with Berry Branch watercolor on paper signed. Japanese 1864-1942. The image measures 14 x 18 inches and the frame 24 x 20.5 inches. Takeuchi Seiho, born December 20, 1864 Died August 23, 1942) was the pseudonym of a Japanese painter of the nihonga genre, active from the Meiji through the early Showa period. One of the founders of nihonga, his works spanned half a century and he was regarded as master of the prewar Kyoto circle of painters. His real name was Takeuchi Tsunekichi. Seiho was born in Kyoto. As a child, he loved to draw and wanted to become an artist. He was a disciple of Kono Bairei of the Maruyama-Shijo school of traditional painting. In 1882, two of his works received awards at the Naikoku Kaiga Kyoshinkai (Domestic Painting Competition), one of the first modern painting competitions in Japan, which launched him on his career. During the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1900), he toured Europe, where he studied Western art. After returning to Japan he established a unique style, combining the realist techniques of the traditional Japanese Maruyama–Shijo school with Western forms of realism borrowed from the techniques of Turner and Corot. This subsequently became one of the principal styles of modern Nihonga. His favorite subjects were animals -often in amusing poses, such as a monkey riding on a horse. He was also noted for his landscapes. From the start of the Bunten exhibitions in 1907, Seiho served on the judging committee. In 1909 he became a professor at the Kyoto Municipal College of Painting (the forerunner to the Kyoto City University of Arts). Seiho also established his own private school, the Chikujokai. Many of his students later went on to establish themselves as noted artists, including Tokuoka Shinsen and Uemura Shoen. In 1913, Seiho was appointed as a court painter to the Imperial Household Agency, and in 1919 was nominated to the Imperial Fine Arts Academy (Teikoku Bijutsuin). He was one of the first persons to be awarded the Order of Culture when it was established in 1937. He initially used characters for the first name of his pseudonym, and this name was possibly pronounced as Saiho. Ruth Trobe hand forged bronze sculpture of a man and a woman. Born 1913 D 2009. The daughter of Samuel and Rose Weiner, Russian-Jewish immigrants, she was born In 1913 in the tiny Jewish community of Beaver Falls PA. In 1936, she married Harold Trobe, also of Beaver Falls. The Weiner and Trobe families knew each other well, although the Weiners were secular socialists and Harold Trobe's father was the town rabbi. In 1947, Ruth and Harold and their two sons, aged 4 and 2, moved to Vienna, Austria where Harold was in charge of displaced persons camps that housed the survivors of the Holocaust. Ruth opened a sculpture studio and soon began to exhibit her work. Harold's social service work on behalf of worldwide Jewry later took the family to Geneva, Rome, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, and Jerusalem, over a 33-year period of living abroad. With access to a glittering international society, Ruth hosted artists, musicians, composers, writers, journalists, Fulbright scholars, and ambassadors. For these peripatetic expatriates, who gathered in her salon, she made critical personal connections and found the best buys. She claimed that she could often identify the undercover CIA agents among them and sometimes even pry out their secrets. Her sculptures, mostly semi-abstract figures of men and women, were displayed in galleries around the world. Among the owners of her work were Golda Meir, past prime minister of Israel, and Leon Fleisher, the noted pianist. This information was obtained from her obituary at obits.mlive.com The sculpture measures 10.5 inches high by 9.5 inches wide. The marble base measures 8 x 3.5 inches by .75 inches. Very few sculptors have the skill to forge a piece by hand to this degree of detail. Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6.35% state sales tax. Soroku Toyoshima aluminum abstract fish sculpture c1968. Incised signature on base. The sculpture measures 28" x 10.5" x 3.5" and is in wonderful condition. Just in from an important CT estate. Soroku Toyoshima was a Japanese artist and sculptor born in 1940. Toyoshima was a member of the Neo-Dadaism Orgainzation. To see other examples of the artist work go to Lot 587 - Dawson's, Morris Plains (February 08, 1997) and Rago auction April 2004 lot 245. There is an exhibition listing in the New York Magazine April 13, 1970 issue for an exhibit by Toyoshima at the Katz gallery 38 E 63 NYC through April 18 1970. and in December 1969 titled "Young New York". Neo-Dadaism Organizers were a group of Japanese artists who showed at the Yomiuri Independent exhibitions of the late 1950s and developed ‘anti-art’ activities modeled on those of the DADA movement. There were frequent dissolutions and reformings, but the group that formed in March 1960 included Masunobu Yoshimura (b 1932), Genpei Akasegawa (b 1937),Shusaku Arakawa, Sho Kazakura, Ushio Shinohara (b 1933) and Soroku Toyoshima (and later Shintaro Tanaka (b 1940) and Shin Kinoshita); with the exception of Tetsumi Kudo and Tomio Miki, who associated with the group but never joined, it seemed then to comprise all the major ‘anti-art’ artists in Japan. Here is a quote from his son Tak Toyosihma who's Asian American-themed comic strip, Secret Asian Man, is now nationally syndicated in major newspapers across the United States." I am also certainly inspired by both of my artistic parents as well as my older brother whose artistic skills I grew up being jealous of Toyoshima adds. My dad, Soroku Toyoshima, was one of a few neo-Dadaist artists coming out of Japan during the 1950s and 1960s, and has shown his work at the Tokyo Museum as well as a number of other shows in Japan and NYC ".
