Still life painting of flowers by English artist F McJannet. This lovely still life oil on artist board was painted by a very accomplished artist. The label on the back reads F. McJannet 5 Cragsland Park Great Urswick Ulverston Studio Tarn Close. The painting measures 16 by 20 inches and the frame measures 20 by 24 and one half inches. "The villages of Great Urswick and Little Urswick, together called Urswick, are located in the Furness peninsula, part of the county of Cumbria in the United Kingdom. They are situated to the south-west of the town of Ulverston. Great Urswick is situated along the north and west sides of Urswick Tarn, a modest body of water (c. 1100 feet by 600), although the largest such natural body in Low Furness. The tarn is fed from the surrounding hills and feeds Gleaston Beck to the south, the water is said to have a red hue due to the iron content of the surrounding land. Little Urswick, the smaller of the two settlements, stands further south on the lower slopes of a limestone outcrop known as Bolton Heads." Taken from Wikepedia Shipping extra. George Arthur Hays landscape sheep painting on canvas c1900. The frame measures 42 inches by 29 inches, the painting measures 24 x 36 inches. Very good condition. George Arthur Hays (1854-1945) sheep landscape oil painting. Bio from RogerKingFineArts.com. George Arthur Hays (1854-1945) is one of Rhode Island's most popular 19th-century artists. He was born in Greenville, New Hampshire and spent his adult life in Providence, keeping a studio at the Woods Building on College Street. Hays was a member of the Providence Art Club, where he exhibited from 1888 to 1940, the Society for Independent Artists, the Copley Society, and the Providence Water Color Club. Self-taught, Hays painted in oils and watercolors and is best known for tranquil landscapes featuring cows and sheep. Records indicate that he painted scenery for "Keith's Circuit," and for Boston's Park Theatre in 1887. His works have an enduring charm that have endeared them to generations of collectors, and his penchant for depicting grazing livestock, whether singly or in flocks, in bucolic settings, seemingly never flagged. Stylistically, Hays' works seem to derive their inspiration from the Barbizon School and French animal portraiture, an offshoot of the Barbizon tradition that dignified work animals, imbuing them with a sense of patient endurance and uncomplaining service. Hays often created companion paintings, one of sheep and another of cows, but rarely combined the two animals within the same composition. Shipping extra.
