George Arthur Hays landscape sheep painting on canvas c1900. The frame measures 42 inches by 29 inches, the painting measures 24 x 36 inches. Very good condition. George Arthur Hays (1854-1945) sheep landscape oil painting. Bio from RogerKingFineArts.com. George Arthur Hays (1854-1945) is one of Rhode Island's most popular 19th-century artists. He was born in Greenville, New Hampshire and spent his adult life in Providence, keeping a studio at the Woods Building on College Street. Hays was a member of the Providence Art Club, where he exhibited from 1888 to 1940, the Society for Independent Artists, the Copley Society, and the Providence Water Color Club. Self-taught, Hays painted in oils and watercolors and is best known for tranquil landscapes featuring cows and sheep. Records indicate that he painted scenery for "Keith's Circuit," and for Boston's Park Theatre in 1887. His works have an enduring charm that have endeared them to generations of collectors, and his penchant for depicting grazing livestock, whether singly or in flocks, in bucolic settings, seemingly never flagged. Stylistically, Hays' works seem to derive their inspiration from the Barbizon School and French animal portraiture, an offshoot of the Barbizon tradition that dignified work animals, imbuing them with a sense of patient endurance and uncomplaining service. Hays often created companion paintings, one of sheep and another of cows, but rarely combined the two animals within the same composition. Shipping extra. Hilton Leech abstract modern art expressionist movement landscape oil painting on artist board. The contrast between the murky greens and the brilliant orange red creates a subtle tension and moodiness. Measures 16.5 inches high x 12.5 inches wide framed, unframed 14 inches high by 10 inches wide. C1950 to 1960. Hilton Leech was a master watercolorist and painter. He was inventive and experimented with a variety of mediums and combined them with watercolor to advance the medium of watercolor beyond the purist aesthetic, mixing the rich quality of casein glazed with colored inks thus creating a range of textures and redefining opaqueness and transparency with a combination of stencils, watercolor and liquid plastics. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1906 and died in 1969. Hilton Leech was 20 before he made up his mind to become an artist. He knew he liked to draw and paint and had won a few local contests. His first love was nature and combined with his artistic aptitudes he decided to enroll in the Grand Central Art School and later studied lithography at the Art Students League. His association with his instructors Arshile Gorky and George Pearce Ennis at the Grand Central Art School moved his career forward as Mr. Ennis hired him as his assistant. In 1931, they came to Sarasota to teach at the new Ringling Art School. Later, Ennis returned to New York and while Leech continued to teach during the winter season for ten years at the Ringling and in the summer had his own school at Amagansett, Long Island. Impressionist landscape by British artist Edward Brian Seago. Oil on artist board, with thick impasto typical of Seago's work from his early period. The painting's focal point is the extraordinary windy sky with its mauve and gray rain clouds obscuring the blue sky beyond. The scene is grounded low with a pea green field and a dark wind tossed tree line. Probably painted in Norfolk because it is so similar to his other works from this area. Seago was born in Norwich in 1910, and died in London in 1974. He was largely self taught but received guidance under Bertam Priestman, R.A. He traveled and worked in Italy, France, Sardinia, Portugal, Morocco, and Hong Kong. His work has been shown in London, Glasgow, New York, Montreal, Los Angeles, Oslo, and Brussels; his work hangs in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. The image measures 8" x 10". It is signed at lower left, and pencil dated verso Sept. 11, 1932. It is in excellent original condition. To see other examples of Seago's works showing the exact same signature and nearly identical subject matter, please go to AskArt.com and type in Edward Seago. "The Bure Valley" features the same signature; it sold at Samuel T. Freeman Co., lot 49, on 6.19.2011.
