Josha A Beal American photographer, born 1831. A rare large format photograph of a wealthy family outside at their home in NYC c1870. The original American black walnut frame with gold insert measures 23 x 28 x 3 inches. The viewing area of the photograph is 12 x 19 inches. The insert (which is original) states J A Beal Photographer 587 and 603 Broadway and 16 Beekman ST N.Y. Good condition with slight fading under original glass. The photograph depicts a wealthy NYC family enjoying the afternoon outside playing crochet. There is a courting bench next to the house, gardeners in the gardens, along with maids, little girls with crochet rackets and a man with horse and carriage waiting. A Photographic" View of New York" Monumental 5-part panorama of lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge Tower by Beal. Albumen prints, total size 10 1/2 x 87 inches (26.7x221 cm.), flush mounted. c1876 estimated at $12,000-18,000 sold on October 4,2012 at Swann Galleries in New York for $96,000. See New York, An Illustrated History, 170-171. Beal's view of New York City was shot in January 1876, after the photographer wrestled his heavy camera equipment, glass plate negatives, and tripod up the tower's thirty flights of stairs. Beal exposed five negatives to create a composite photograph nearly seven feet long. The images provided a never-before-seen sweeping panorama of lower Manhattan's landmarks and commercial activity along the East River. In the distance, landmarks such as Trinity Church, the Western Union Building, St. Paul's Chapel, the new Post Office, and the Tribune Building are also depicted. Dominating the scene is the massive New York Tower of the Brooklyn Bridge, which was completed in 1883. AMERICAN ART ASSOCIATION. ALPHONSE KANN COLLECTION, in 2 hard cover volumes, New York c1927. Consisting of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Persian, Moyen Age and Renaissance Works of Art. Exellent condition with the original first purchase card still intact. The each measure 11 x 9 inches. Alphonse Kann (14 March 1870 - 1948) was a prominent French art collector of Jewish heritage. He was a childhood playmate and adult friend of the writer Marcel Proust, who incorporated several of Kann's features into the character Charles Swann (in Swann in Love). The name Kann, written with double "nn", was said in Paris to be "le plus chic du chic". Known for his discerning taste and shrewd collecting instincts, Kann shocked the art world in 1927 by auctioning off most of his Old Master collection (including works by Bruegel, Cimabue, Fragonard, Pollaiuolo, Rubens and Tintoretto) in order to concentrate on the acquisition of 19th century and modern art, which he collected vigorously over the following decade. Kann left France for England in 1938 without making an inventory of his eclectic art collection, which was kept in a St.-Germain-en-Laye mansion and subsequently looted in October 1940 by Nazi occupiers. Kann recovered only a small fraction of his large collection before his death in England in 1948. Although he did not live to see a copy, the Nazi inventory of Kann's art collection ran to 60 typed pages. Decades after the war, several paintings from Kann's collection were discovered in prominent European and U.S. museums. "Smoke Over Rooftops," a 1911 painting by Fernand Léger, was returned in October 2008 to Kann's heirs by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts after an eleven-year investigation. In the 1990s, eight antique manuscripts once owned by Kann turned up the vaults of Wildenstein & Company, still bearing the distinctive Nazi catalog numbers ("KA 879" to "KA 886", in red pencil) likely made by Bruno Lohse as he processed the Kann collection in the Jeu de Paume. The discovery of the missing manuscripts prompted a lawsuit by Kann's heirs against Wildenstein & Company.y. Shipping extra. Doris Ullman photograph of John Jacob Niles playing the piano. Platinum print circa 1930. Ulmann was born in NYC in 1882, and died there in 1934. The J. Paul Getty museum biography notes that "she preserved the rural cultures of the southeastern United States through her photographs. She worked particularly in the "Southern Highlands" of the Appalachian Mountains, creating portraits of the residents. In 1933, she contributed photographs to Roll, Jordan, Roll, a book by novelist Julia Peterkin about the vanishing black culture, known as Gullah, of the South Carolina islands and coastal areas. In collaboration with musician, actor, and folklorist John Jacob Niles, she made what Niles called annual "folklore and photographic expeditions" to the Southern Highlands between 1928 and 1934. Ulmann's equipment was somewhat cumbersome and old-fashioned for her time. She most often used a 6½ x 8½ inch, tripod-mounted view camera, although the lightweight, hand-held camera was more prevalent, and she produced soft-focus platinum prints. The photograph measures 6" x 7.75", and is museum mounted in a walnut 14.5" x 16" frame. Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6.35% state sales tax.
