A Photographic" View of New York" Monumental 5-part panorama of lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge Tower by Beal. Albumen prints, total size 10 1/2 x 87 inches (26.7x221 cm.), flush mounted. c1876 estimated at $12,000-18,000 sold on October 4,2012 at Swann Galleries in New York for $96,000. Beal's view of New York City was shot in January 1876, after the photographer wrestled his heavy camera equipment, glass plate negatives, and tripod up the tower's thirty flights of stairs. Beal exposed five negatives to create a composite photograph nearly seven feet long. The images provided a never-before-seen sweeping panorama of lower Manhattan's landmarks and commercial activity along the East River. In the distance, landmarks such as Trinity Church, the Western Union Building, St. Paul's Chapel, the new Post Office, and the Tribune Building are also depicted. Dominating the scene is the massive New York Tower of the Brooklyn Bridge, which was completed in 1883. Civil War Collectors-here is an antique document that reflects the daily life of the Civil War soldier. It is a receipt, dated 5 December 1862 in Middletown, Connecticut, and issued by the Adams Express Company's Army and Soldiers Package Express. The receipt is for shipment of one box from Middletown to Washington, DC. The interesting part of this old document is in the fine print. The company promises only to get the package to a convenient point near the destination where it will be turned over to third parties for delivery to the consignee or the "Quartermaster or other officer of the regiment to which the consignee is attached." Disclaimers of liability follow. War was close to home in those days. Still-where were UPS and Federal Express when you needed them? The piece is approximately 8 ¼ inches wide by 5 inches high. It has been framed for your enjoyment, and the overall dimensions are approximately 10 ¾ inches by 8 ¾. Condition is excellent with no chips or tears. There are creases, as the recipient obviously folded the receipt to put it in his pocket, just as we would today. This is a fine piece of Americana, taken from the darkest hour of the country's history. Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6% state sales tax. Doris Ullman photograph of John Jacob Niles playing the piano. Platinum print circa 1930. Ulmann was born in NYC in 1882, and died there in 1934. The J. Paul Getty museum biography notes that "she preserved the rural cultures of the southeastern United States through her photographs. She worked particularly in the "Southern Highlands" of the Appalachian Mountains, creating portraits of the residents. In 1933, she contributed photographs to Roll, Jordan, Roll, a book by novelist Julia Peterkin about the vanishing black culture, known as Gullah, of the South Carolina islands and coastal areas. In collaboration with musician, actor, and folklorist John Jacob Niles, she made what Niles called annual "folklore and photographic expeditions" to the Southern Highlands between 1928 and 1934. Ulmann's equipment was somewhat cumbersome and old-fashioned for her time. She most often used a 6½ x 8½ inch, tripod-mounted view camera, although the lightweight, hand-held camera was more prevalent, and she produced soft-focus platinum prints. The photograph measures 6" x 7.75", and is museum mounted in a walnut 14.5" x 16" frame. Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6.35% state sales tax.
