10 volume book series on Japan. Written by Japanese eminent authorities and scholars. Published by J. B. Millet Publishing Company, Boston, MA. Copyright 1898. Hardcover. 1st edition. Several matted full page plates. Original silk covered boards. Silk ties. An outstanding production with each folio volume (approx. 39.5 cm) bound in different colored silk crepe "made by hand in Tokyo and printed there by the Xylography process [woodcut] under the supervision of K. Ogawa of Tokyo." Japanese binding secured with silk tassels and cords made by S. Iida of Kyoto. Title-page of vol. 1 contains a small woodcut on Chine-colle and mounted. The frontispiece of each volume is a colour flower Collotype print made in Tokyo by K. Ogawa mounted and matted, the final print in each volume illustrating the lecture on Japanese art by K. Okakura, is an art reproduction plate by the Xylograph [woodcut] process, hand-colored, mounted and matted. Each volume contains 20 hand-colored albumen photos mounted in the text, and 6 full-page hand-colored albumen photos mounted and matted. Each volume contains the loosely inserted notice from the publisher: "Caution. Do Not Cut the Leaves of this book, as it is bound in Japanese style. J.B. Millet Colmpany, Publishers, Boston, Mass." 9 of 10 original shipping cartons and original plain publisher's wrappers. Contents include: Vol. 1: "The Empire; Its Size, Buildings, Cities and Scenery." Vol. 2: "The Early Japanese and Their History." Vol. 3: "Establishment of the Tokugawa Dynasty and Japan's Relations with the Orient in the Early Ages of the Christian Era." Vol. 4: "Mediaeval Japan." Vol. 5: "Yoshitsune, Genghis and the Mongol Invasion." Vol. 6: "Religion and Rites." Vol. 7: "Festivals." Vol. 8: "Chapter XII. Observations and Pastimes (continued)." Vol. 9: "Japan's Commercial and Political Intercourse with Foreign Countries." Vol. 10: "The Attitude of Japan Toward Foreign Residents-Japanese Finance, concluded."
