The first contact with Europeans brought with it small pot to the Hopi people of the mesa's and to make things even worst they experience the worst droughts they had experience at that time which made some flee and take refuge with and in the Zuni Pueblo's to the east of them, the refugees returned to the Hopi lands appro: 1700 ad, and they had adopted the Zuni polychrome style of pottery making from that point forward to approx: 1890 ad. This canteen is appro: 1850 to 1890 ad. it is 7"high X 5.5"wide It has a kachina face painted on one side, it is a polychrome with black, red, and grey slip. When I aquired it the bottom looked as if it had been twisted off nice and nice so I had the best restorer in Arizona repair it, she reglued it and restored the crack. I know everyone uses the word rare but I would say this a one of a kind due to it wasn't made for sale or trade to the tourist it is a personal canteen for personal use.
