An Indian stone surahi expertly turned on a lathe from a single piece of black steatite, a variety of soapstone. It is beautifully made and very light, displaying the remarkable hollowing performed by the artisan. It relates directly to bronze and brass versions from the 18th century. With this flask is a turned alabaster bowl, also elegantly made, that has a curious slightly domed bottom. The bowl perhaps dates from the 19th century...

An unusual Japanese Arita dish, Kakiemon or Kakiemon style, circa 1670 ~ 1700.

An oval Thewa pendant from Rajasthan in northern India. Thewa is the technique invented around 400 years ago where filigree gold designs are fused onto a coloured glass ground, then backed with silver foil. This pendant depicts prey being attacked in what looks like a palace garden. The work is very fine and I have had to show the photographs oversize to show the detail...

A large Chinese famille rose 'mille fleur' vase, the base with a Qianlong mark. The decoration is to a high standard and the shape of the vase is typical Qianlong but it is my opinion that the vase dates from the 19th century. Apart from that it is in very poor condition and is in need of a good restorer. The damage was committed a very long time ago, the glue used to rebuild looks like an animal glue that would dissolve if soaked in water for a day or two...

A Chinese cloisonné bowl decorated with blossom against a black ground. The bowl is enamel on copper, quite substantially made and so fairly heavy. A Chinese flambé baluster vase, 18th ~ 19th century. The copper-red glaze is a transmutation glaze that, in earlier times, was notoriously difficult to fire correctly. The deep red hue drains from the neck leaving a warm mushroom colour, the inside of the neck and within the foot-rim glazed white. There is a fine crazing to the glaze all over.

Approximately 22.4 cm high, 16.5 cm diameter. The vase is substantially potted and weighs 1457 gm. There has been a break in the mouth-rim a...
