A good Chinese agate snuff bottle carved to represent a ribbed gourd. The material is not so yellow as it appears under my photographic lamps, it more like beeswax in colour and exhibits all of the natural colour differences and striations natural to the stone. The ribbing finishes at the base leaving a concave foot, now covered with a collectors inventory number. The stopper is stained bone. This is a genuine old bottle, nicely hollowed.

Approximately 6.3 cm high. Perfect condition...

A Chinese glass snuff bottle made to imitate agate. Though simple in appearance these bottles were very difficult to make as the glass had to be first striated and then given darker patches whilst molten, before blowing to form the bottle. A genuine old bottle. The base has an old collectors label mistakenly identifying the bottle as agate.

Approximately 5.8 cm high. Fine condition...

A fine carved and painted marble sculpture of the Hindu deity Ganesha, the elephant-headed god. He is holding his war axe in one hand, an elephant goad, ankusha, in another. The design of butterflies and melons is seldom encountered on Chinese porcelain, found only on a few Qianlong pieces. This shaped dish I feel is from the early 19th century but the ‘orange peel’ surface of the porcelain is often found on Qianlong export pieces. Like the Qianlong painted melons these have a pronounced ‘spotting’ in either famille rose or gold enamel on the fruits.

Approximately 20.6cm across, 6.4 cm high...

The square bowl with flaring sides and indented canted corners on a flared base. It is covered overall with a very thick opaque mushroom coloured glaze with a wonderful intentional crackle. The crackle is stained and in places exhibits the famous iron wire and golden thread effect found on the fabled Song Guan wares. This bowl dates from the 18th century, or possibly earlier...

A Japanese stoneware sake bottle, tokkuri, from the Inuyama kiln in Maruyama, Owari Province.

The kiln is noted for overglaze enamelling introduced by Dohei in 1835 and these gourd-shaped bottles decorated with maple leaves are perhaps the best known of all. I have always loved this design since obtaining a copy of Feddersen's 'Japanese Decorative Art', Faber & Faber, London,1962.

The bottle is boldly decorated with green and red leaves, the red with areas of flaking. This is a ...

A very fine Chinese porcelain small square brush pot superbly enamelled with figures in a garden setting, probably scenes from a famous novel. The interior and base have been covered with a finely turquoise glaze. Within the foot-rim is a well-written six character Qianlong mark in seal script but the brush pot is from the end of the 19th century.

Approximately 7.3cm high, 5cm square. The brush pot is in fine condition. The base of the interior has fine particles of kiln dross. ...

An interesting Japanese fluted oval porcelain dish, nagazara, attributed to a Kutani kiln but with the interior decoration in Kakiemon style. Meiji.

Approximately 22.7 cm long. The dish is in original perfect condition. The close-up photographs show that some parts of the rim are very slightly discoloured and other parts have uneven glaze. This is more apparent in the photographs than in reality.

A Chinese double overlay snuff bottle. 19th century. An opaque white glass bottle is encased in sapphire blue glass and then encased again in white. These two layers are then cleverly carved away to leave a design of an ancient fisherman attended by his young apprentice. Double overlay bottles are uncommon.

The clear glass stopper is not original but it seems to suit the bottle.

Approximately 7.5cm high. Fine condition.

A rare Chinese Export 'Bourdaloue', Qianlong period, circa 1760. The item is, in fact, a chamber pot designed expressly for use by 'the fairer sex'. The incurving sides designed for comfort, bear in mind that this vessel was often used whilst standing.

The urinal was given the nickname 'Bourdaloue' after the famous Jesuit priest Louis Bourdaloue (1632-1704) whose longwinded sermons were famous. A comprehensive description of the bourdaloue is to be found on the blog 'janeaustenworld' on ...

A Chinese porcelain flambé glaze snuff bottle. 19th century. The flambé glaze is a transmutation glaze and was notoriously difficult to control in the kiln, often with the result of the glaze running off the foot onto the kiln support. This led to a ragged edge to the foot that would need to be ground smooth. This has happened here as can be seen in the photographs. Also evident are slivers of missing glaze created when the bottle was removed from the kiln support. There are also two minuscule...
