An old Nanban hanging flower vase, kakéhana, in its original inscribed box. The vase is in fine undamaged condition and has a good old patina. The inscription literally translates as “Nanban hanging flower vase”. The applied decoration is perhaps a depiction of a Buddhist rosary. 19th century.

A Japanese Kyo-yaki bowl decorated with acorns and oak leaves in thick gosu blue enamel. The moulded stoneware body is probably from a Seto kiln. Meiji period.

Approximately 14.5 cm diameter, 5 cm high. Fine condition with only one shallow frit to the rim noted.

A JAPANESE KAISEKI DISH, KYO~YAKI, 19TH CENTURY.

A large stoneware leaf-shaped dish decorated with leaves and fruits in over-glaze blue and green enamels on top of underglaze blue veins. Probably a kaiseki dish for the tea ceremony. Late Edo, 19th century, Kyoto.

9.1/16 inches (23 cm) long, 5.1/2 inches (14 cm) wide. There are three lines from the edge that appear not to be a result of accidental damage but stress after the firing...

AN UNUSUAL SETO TOKKURI, 19TH CENTURY.

The body covered overall with a persimmon slip beneath the clear glaze, the neck dipped in a thick green glaze. The potter has engraved some fruit/vegetable forms through the slip before glazing, something I’ve never seen before. The orange and green go very well together. Within the foot-rim the body is clear glazed giving the more typical oatmeal colouring associated with Seto stoneware...
