A Japanese Imari barber's bowl, circa 1690 ~ 1730. Also known as a 'bleeding' bowl after the then popular medical procedure of letting blood to relieve symptoms. Incidentally, barbers offered both services at the time. These bowls were made to order in Arita and were for export to the West. The rim has two holes, pierced before firing, to allow the bowl to be hung on the wall when not in use.

A very similar bowl but lacking the green enamel is illustrated in Shibata, No...

A Japanese Imari jug, early 18th century. This jug was made in Arita specifically for export to the West, the shape after a contemporary Delft pottery sample. The clear glaze has a blue-green tinge though not strong enough perhaps, to describe as celadon. The handle has a small hole, pierced before firing, to allow the fixture of a hinged silver lid if required when the jug arrived in Europe.

Approximately 15.8 cm high...

A Chinese Changguan or teadust glazed double gourd vase, 18th ~ 19th century. The vase is skillfully made from fine and compact porcelain which can be seen on the wide foot-rim. The glaze is mottled and neatly finishes just above the foot with a dark brown line. Where the porcelain is exposed on the exterior it has burned to an orange colour during the firing.

A good Chinese agate snuff bottle carved to represent a ribbed gourd. The material is not so yellow as it appears under my photographic lamps, it more like beeswax in colour and exhibits all of the natural colour differences and striations natural to the stone. The ribbing finishes at the base leaving a concave foot, now covered with a collectors inventory number. The stopper is stained bone. This is a genuine old bottle, nicely hollowed.

Approximately 6.3 cm high. Perfect condition...

A Chinese glass snuff bottle made to imitate agate. Though simple in appearance these bottles were very difficult to make as the glass had to be first striated and then given darker patches whilst molten, before blowing to form the bottle. A genuine old bottle. The base has an old collectors label mistakenly identifying the bottle as agate.

Approximately 5.8 cm high...

The design of butterflies and melons is seldom encountered on Chinese porcelain, found only on a few Qianlong pieces. This shaped dish I feel is from the early 19th century but the ‘orange peel’ surface of the porcelain is often found on Qianlong export pieces. Like the Qianlong painted melons these have a pronounced ‘spotting’ in either famille rose or gold enamel on the fruits.

Approximately 20.6cm across, 6.4 cm high. Perfect condition with no frits, chips, cracks or rest...

The square bowl with flaring sides and indented canted corners on a flared base. It is covered overall with a very thick opaque mushroom coloured glaze with a wonderful intentional crackle. The crackle is stained and in places exhibits the famous iron wire and golden thread effect found on the fabled Song Guan wares. This bowl dates from the 18th century, or possibly earlier.   A rare porcelain bowl.

A Japanese stoneware sake bottle, tokkuri, from the Inuyama kiln in Maruyama, Owari Province.

The kiln is noted for overglaze enamelling introduced by Dohei in 1835 and these gourd-shaped bottles decorated with maple leaves are perhaps the best known of all. I have always loved this design since obtaining a copy of Feddersen's 'Japanese Decorative Art', Faber & Faber, London,1962.

The bottle is boldly decorated with green and red leaves, the red with areas of flaking. This is a ...
