Manufactured specifically for export to Europe sometime during the first half of the 18th century. The cutout, rather small in this case, is to allow the bowl to fit comfortably under the chin when the barber is wielding the razor. Barbers at that time also provided a service to the medical profession by bleeding patients and these bowls are sometimes called 'Bleeding Bowls'...

A fine cast bronze suiban, a low bowl used for suiseki, an eccentric rock or stone displayed often on a bed of sand or water. This lobed bowl has three feet formed as stunted growths of prunus. The base has the mark of Murata Seimin (1761-1837), a well-known 19th century artisan in bronze.

Approximately 28cm diameter. Signs of long life, light wear and the odd paint spot but no dents or cracks. One prunus stem has lost its tip, noted in the photographs...

This unusual vase is made from red stoneware, possibly Yixing, and is in the form of a Scholar's rock table decoration. The vase and stand is made in one piece, the stand similar in design to wood stands depicting horizontal layered rocks made in the 18th century. The eccentric boulder is thinly glazed to produce a naturalistic finish. 19th century or perhaps earlier.

A Chinese turquoise glazed meiping vase, Kangxi period, late 17th or early 18th century. The vase is thickly glazed with a finely crackled blue glaze.
