A Japanese Imari barber's bowl, circa 1690 ~ 1730. Also known as a 'bleeding' bowl after the then popular medical procedure of letting blood to relieve symptoms. The rim has two holes, pierced before firing, to allow the bowl to be hung on the wall when not in use.

A very similar bowl but lacking the green enamel is illustrated in Shibata, No...

The clear glaze has a blue-green tinge though not strong enough perhaps, to describe as celadon. The handle has a small hole, pierced before firing, to allow the fixture of a hinged silver lid if required when the jug arrived in Europe.

A JAPANESE EXPORT DISH, LATE 17TH CENTURY.

This fine dish is decorated with designs taken from Ming Chinese Wanli 'Kraak' wares and came about as a result of a disruption of Chinese production during a period of unrest. Dutch traders who found their Chinese trade stopped resorted to ordering from Japanese makers. The Japanese versions of these Kraak style pieces are usually thicker than the very thin Chinese Kraak wares and this has ensured their survival in often pristine condition...
