A JAPANESE SHINTO GONG, SIGNED SEI KYO YOSHIDA ZO

A large and heavy double-sided bronze gong in the form of a vertical drum, perhaps intended for use in a Shinto ceremony. Each part of the gong and stand has been made using the lost wax technique and this has led to the use of much fine decoration on the surface. The base plate is cast with the maker's name and origin, “Seikyo Yoshida Zo.” Yoshida made this in Kyoto.

Approximately 50 cm high...

A JAPANESE SETO STONEWARE SAKE BOTTLE, 19TH CENTURY.

The stoneware tokkuri covered overall with a clear ash glaze, the mouth with a dripping tenmoku glaze. 19th century.

Approximately 24 cm high, weighs 1550 gm. Perfect except for a shallow chip on the foot-rim, noted in the photographs.

A GOOD PORCELAIN VASE BY MAKUZU KOZAN, MEIJI.

A fine quality lantern shape porcelain vase beautifully decorated with pairs of fishes against a swirling blue ground. Within the foot-rim can be found the mark “Makuzu Kozan sei” in underglaze blue.

Approximately 10.7/8 inches (27.6cm) high. The vase is in perfect condition but the camera picks up some light wear from normal use. The very light scratches on the body of the lower red fish cannot be seen in normal viewing...

A GOOD JAPANESE SNUFF BOTTLE FOR THE CHINESE MARKET, 19th CENTURY

An excellent carved ivory and lacquer snuff bottle with its original and well-chosen stopper. On one side is found Kannon (Guanyin) riding on a Shi-Shi, the other has a squirrel on a vine. The neck and sides embellished with lacquer. The bottle is well hollowed.

The low cylindrical bowl and cover decorated overall with scrolling flowers on a sprinkled gold ground. The interior is red lacquer. Nice quality work. Late 18th or early 19th century.

5.3/8 inches (13.7cm) diameter, 2.3/4 inches (7cm) high. The lacquer is dirty and would benefit greatly with a gentle clean. The mouth rim has some nibbles; I show the worst, and the lid has a chip and some nibbles on the edge...

A JAPANESE ARITA IMARI NAGAZARA, 18TH CENTURY.

The decoration is divided diagonally with a blue and gilt border, one side features a waterfall and pine landscape, the other with karakusa. An excellent design methinks. The back of the dish with the good wishes ‘fuki choson’. First half of the 18th century.

8.3/4 inches (22.2cm) by 4.5/8 (11.8cm) inches. No cracks or restoration. What appears to be a brown firing blemish on the back was dirt, I have just cleaned it off....

Shibata illustrates a similar form though with a floral decoration which he dates to 1655 ~ 1670, Impey shows a closer example in ‘Japanese Export Porcelain’ that he dates to the late 17th century. I cannot recall ever seeing one of these ewers with a lid; certainly a lid was never in situ when this ewer was fired as the rim is fully glazed. One has to consider that a lid has been found for the ewer but it seems fortunate that this lid has a pronoun...

The tiny Imari was ewer made for export to the Netherlands, the letter A is for azijn (vinegar). Originally it would have had a lid. It was made 1700 ~ 1730.

A Japanese silver wire cloisonné enamel box and cover decorated with butterflies and flowers. The lid has nicely rounded edges, the bottom is also decorated and the interior has its original silk lining. It has been a difficult to photograph properly, the ground colour I would describe as blue grey slate.

The pear-shaped porcelain has been paddled before decorating to create four flattened sides on which to paint alternating panels of flowering wisteria and dancing boys. A PAIR OF ARITA KO-IMARI DRAGON DISHES, 18TH CENTURY.

A striking pair of enamelled dragon dishes dating from the second half of the 18th century, 1750~1780. The backs with spur marks and apocryphal six-character Chenghua marks. In exceptional condition with gilding intact. The design is similar to Chinese examples often dated to the Yongzheng period and further copied in Europe.

AN ARITA ENAMELLED DISH, EARLY 18TH CENTURY.

A wonderful double-gourd shaped dish, the decoration divided into two parts. A bough of flowering prunus is displayed above an area of brocade. Shibata illustrates a couple of dishes similar in composition though not exactly the same, dated to 1640 ~ 1650.

Just a tad under 7 inches (17.5 cm) long. One side of the pouring lip has been broken off and glued back. It looks a clean break though a former owner has gold painted the join...
