Charles Marie Joseph Alfred Touchemolin was born in Strasbourg, 9th November, 1829, died in Brighton, UK, 1907. A noted painter, mostly of military subjects.

The technique used is somewhat unusual, as well as opaque water colour extensive use has been made of pencil (on top) and scraffito, to expose the white ground. Indeed, the signature is created using scraffito.

The former owner of this fine watercolour painting assured me that although it is unsigned it was by a British military officer, Alan David Greenhill-Gardyne. He was commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders in 1888 and was with the Regiment at the Relief of Chitral in 1895. Frederick Starr was a professor of anthropology at Chicago University who first visited Japan in 1904 and made many subsequent visits. He wrote many papers on Japanese subjects but is probably best known in Japan for his interest in pilgrimage, he dressed in traditional pilgrim’s clothing and performed the Shikoku pilgrimage in 1917 and 1921...

A EUROPEAN COLOUR WOODBLOCK PRINT.

A large print on handmade paper, no watermark, signed indistinctly F*** Koch. The artist has also included his seal and the limited edition information, 18/350. Going on the style I would guess that the print is from the first half of the 20th century and produced in Austria or Germany.
