A FINE ANGLO-CEYLONESE CARVED EBONY BOX, 19TH CENTURY
The box is carved from native Ceylonese ebony. It is a valuable wood, it is dense, heavy, carves beautifully and is capable of taking and retaining a high polish. The lock and hinges appear to be English and the interior corners of the box and lid have recessed strengthening brackets. I would date the box to the early / mid 19th century. It was probably made as a document box, the ebony being impervious to insect attack. A fine and increasingly rare memento of the British Raj. 13.1/2” x 5.1/2” x 5.1/2”. Though basically in original and fine condition, the lid has two short age splits and is very slightly distorted. The two screws holding the lock are replacements. The original key is still present and the lock is fully working. |
