A VERY FINE INDIAN SILVER VISITING CARD CASE, 19TH CENTURY.
Just imagine yourself as a young East India Company officer arriving in 19th century India. When you finally arrived at your posting’s British Cantonment you didn’t actually speak to any of the other British residents until you had been introduced. This involved calling at the houses of your betters and leaving your visiting card in the hope of receiving later an invitation to tiffin, or better. You would, of course, need a card case to match your position and a fine example would have been purchased in Calcutta or Bombay en route. A fine silver card case of European shape but decorated with an Indian goddess, (Sarasvati?), angels and dancing figures. High grade silver and beautiful workmanship dating from the mid 19th century. 4” x 2.7/8”. Approximately 125 grams. Fine condition with only light wear to the high spots. The rate for conversion of GBP (£) to the currency of your country will be the daily rate supplied by: http://www.xe.net/ |
