I know little of these things but I do like the original, untouched appearance of this club. I was told it was from Samoa and from the 19th century but it seems to my untutored eye to be similar to clubs from Fiji. The club and inlay appear darker in reality; my photographic lights make the wood seem lighter and the inlay much brighter. The inlay appears to be crushed pigment (sea shells?) rubbed in after carving the design; the pigment also has filled the wood grain around the patterns. The patina looks entirely original with no colouring or varnish and I like the fact that the finely cut layout lines have over the years picked up dirt and patina and now appear in relief.

37.5/8 inches long. The club is in fine condition with no splits, the only faults being slight wear to a corner and a former owner has screwed in an iron hook in order to display the item.
