Fine Japanese Ivory Box, Signed, 19th Century.

A VERY FINE AND UNUSUAL JAPANESE IVORY BOX, SIGNED, 19TH CENTURY.

The form of this box is derived from the shape produced by the cross-section of the elephant tusk. It’s merits lay in the very fine carving of the figures that cover the walls of the box and the attractive scene on the lid. The scene depicted on the wall of the base appears to be young men engaged in the martial arts, practicing swordplay with bamboo swords, shinai, much like kendo. The players are wearing padded trousers and padded kimono, some fighting and others appear to be acting as referees, carrying large fans. It is not a subject I have seen before depicted other than in painting. The scene on the lid is of similarly garbed young men preparing a large stone bath (?) for some ritual perhaps. The side has a raised tablet with a three-character signature.

Maximum dimensions are 4.3/16 inches (10.7cm) x 3.1/2 inches (8.9cm) x 1.15/16 inches (5cm) high. The base has three chips to the bottom edge. The frame of the lid has an old shrinkage crack repaired with tiny rivets and a plate on the inside and a chip to the flange. An original short crack in the base plate has been disguised by the maker with floral engraving, also in the lid. All faults are shown in the pictures and it can be seen that, with modern techniques, a fine job could be made of the restoration and the box could be brought back to its former splendour.
