A pair of Japanese Buddhist stele, 19th century.

Each stele consisting of a bas-relief figure against a cloud scroll decorated background and on a lotus form base. Marine ivory, probably narwhal, of a rich and creamy colour, the backs are darker. Very nicely carved and quite rare.

The seated figure 5.1/4" high, the flowing ribbon broken and re-stuck on the left side. The standing figure 4.15/16" high, ribbon problem same as the first figure, three age cracks on the back. These slight imperfections brought about by the different rates of shrinkage between the thin ribbons and the thicker backs.Tiny chip to right side of the crown.
