A splendid carved and painted marble sculpture of the Hindu deity Vishnu in the form of the avatar Narasimha, half-lion, half-man. From northern India, mid 19th century.
“Lord Vishnu then emerged as a half lion, half man from the pillar which was neither inside the house nor outside, and the time was evening, neither night nor day. He then killed Hiranyakasyapa, the King of the Demons, thus saving the life of his devotee Prahlada.” 7.3/16 inches (18.3cm) high, 4.1/4 inches (10.8cm) wide. One small chip to the base, front left, otherwise fine. For this genre the sculpture is in unusually good condition, most are found badly broken.
