One of the great designs from the Kangxi period. The dish is firstly fired unglazed, apart from a clear glaze within the foot-rim, then the ‘biscuit’ body is decorated with low-fired enamels, manganese, green, yellow and clear, in the tortoiseshell-like pattern familiar to all collectors of classic Chinese ceramics.

Approximately 4.5/8 inches (11.7 cm) diameter, 2.1/2 inches (6.3cm) high. These thinly made dishes are almost always found with hairline cracks, this example is no exception though the two short hairlines that this dish has have now been professionally stabilised and it rings well when tapped with a finger. I have been unable to photograph the hairlines, they are not easily spotted though one starts on the rim with a minuscule chip that I show both sides of in the detail pictures. Both are less than one inch long. There is also a chip inside of the foot-rim and quite a lot of wear and scratches from general use to the enamel surface though it displays well.
