Map of America issued by De L’Isle and Bauche, c.1783 “Carte d’ Amerique” Atlas Géographique des Quatres Parties du Monde. J A Dezauche. 1783 featuring Copper engraving. Original Color. Overall in excellent condition, slight staining on top margin not affecting the image. A detailed map of the Americas revised by Dezauche with decorative cartouche. Small inset entitled “ Supplément a la Partie Nord-Ouest de l’Amérique d’apres les Déscouvertes du Capitaine Cook” The best known figure in French cartography, Guillaume de L’Isle was considered a prodigy and published his first atlas in 1700 at the age of 25. His maps were reissued at his death in 1726 by Philippe Buache, his nephew, who is well regarded as a very prolific theoretical cartographer in his own right. De L’Isle and Bauche are noted in several important books on Antique Maps including Jonathan Potter’s “ Collecting Antique Maps” and Phaidon’s “Antique Maps” by Moreland and and Bannister.
