| This charming and naive piece comes from an estate sale in Mexico City and is the work of Sr. Rebollard, who was an attorney that lived in Mexico City. I have had this piece in my personal collection for several years now. I was told that as a younger man or boy, Sr. Rebollard had lived through the Mexican Revolution. His memories of the hardship and tragedy brought to his village by the Revolution became the subject matter for many of his paintings. Francisco (Pancho) Villa was then, and must have remained a hero throughout his life. The central portrait appears to be either a hand rendered portrait in colored pencils or a hand colored (again with pencils) copy of the famous portrait by Diego Rivera. Either way, it is oval in shape, has been laminated and then somehow united to its decorated paper backing. The paper backing is hand colored (with what appears to be colored pencils). The entire work is stabilized with a cardboard backing. Handmade frame of unknown base covered in foil. The corners of the frame are finished in a leather or leatherette. Original copper hang mechanism remains. There is some water spotting and a cut to the cardboard which is only visible from the back. I suspect that the cut was made when Sr. Rebollard was completing the piece. Marvelous example of folk art and outsider art from this self trained and self motivated artist. | ||||||||||||
