Delightful, Large Day of the Dead Wood Tableau
One the largest, most delightful vintage wooden toys from Mexico that I have had the pleasure of coming across. This ca. late 1950s-late 1960s mechanical toy captures a group of five skeletons out for a bit of carousing in a local taverna. They are smoking, drinking, playing guitar, and generally enjoying themselves during their annual return visit to this earthly life. A little metal bar and crank on the right hand side can be turned, and when turned, hands start to gyrate, feet start to bounce and guitars start to strum. Whimsical painting seems to capture the personality of each patron. Cotton hair (appearing to be hand spun) adorns each skull. Very, very large at 27 3/4" tall and 19 1/2" across. In very fine condition. A marvelous example of this popular art of Mexico.
