| Measuring 13 7/8" by 17", in charcoal and heavy pencil (or possibly felt pen), this figural study is unusual, depicting two skeletons, as well as nudes in various poses. The central figure is typical of his lush, voluptuous female nudes. There are some stains at the top right and along the lower left side, and a perforation in the paper, also at the upper right, all visible in photos. Brother of Beauford Delaney, Joseph is a significant artist in his own right, often depicting scenes from his youth and images from the New York City area. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1904, he spent most of his artist career in the New York area. He died at age 87 in Knoxville. | ||
