| This large water jug, from the Mexcala (also Mezcala) region in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, is a traditional form that has been utilized in the area since pre-hispanic times. It measures 16 1/4" high, and approximately 14 1/2' wide at the handles and is decorated with red and black pigments over a cream colored slip. The decoration in this vessel is particularly nice, with most of the body covered in well executed foliate design. One side is slightly higher, as it is not perfectly even, and it is in good condition, with one leg broken and repaired, visible in photos. For other examples of this ware, see Amanda Thompson's "Mexican Pottery of the 20th Century", pages 175-176. Extimating date to be prior to 1980. A big, dramatic piece, the vessel is a fine example of traditional Mexican utilitarian ware of this region. | ||
