Exquisite Aquatint DOEL REED Nude in Landscape 1946
Number 2 in a small edition of 25, this richly inked and lush aquatint of a nude woman lolling in a Southwestern landscape is a prime example of Doel Reed's (American 1895-1985) exceptional artistry and printmaking skills. A large size, the actual image measures 10" by 16 3/4", with margins of several inches more. Preserved with archival materials, the framed size is 20 1/2' by 27". Excellent condition, with slight stain on paper backing frame (lower corner). Because of the glass, it is hard to clearly photograph the fine texture, detail, and subtlety of color, but the image is quite remarkable in quality and shading; there are numerous shades of gray, with fine details creating different textures, and as is common in Reed's work, the contrast between dark and light is dramatic. Doel Reed is recognized as an important Taos artist, whose works hang in major museums and collections, and was a member of the National Academy of Design. His paintings of the Southwest are strong, often with a striking linear quality, sometimes contrasted with softer, voluptuous forms. He was inspired by the aquatints of Goya, and his resulting prints demonstrate similar, but uniquely powerful images. This is an exceptional print by this significant artist, in size, quality and rarity.
