View of Grand Canal Venice KARL KAUFFMANN Oil/Panel
This idyllic and lovely scene of the Grand Canal in Venice was painted by Karl Kaufmann (Austrian 1843-1901) on a wood panel, and appears to have the original frame. Kauffmann is known for primarily for his landscapes, painted throughout Europe and the Middle East, and painted under numerous pseudonyms (H. Carnier, among others). This rendering of the Grand Canal depicts a softly lit scene, including several gondolas and boats, and includes views of Santa Maria della Salute in the background left, as well as the St.Marks Columns, the Doges Palace, and entrance to the Piazza. The wood panel measures 12 1/14" by 18" (sight size slightly smaller), and the frame is 19 1/2" by 25 5/8". The back of the panel has a pencil notation, "venedig (Grand Canal)". Both painting and frame are in good condition, the frame having been painted with a dull gold surface, as was often done during the Victorian era (the original, bright gilding is evident where the paint has worn off). There are some minor losses to frame, but are quite small and easily restorable. The painting has a glossy varnish surface, and appears completely intact and unrestored. The back of the wood panel is braced with two wood strips to prevent warping. In the lower right corner, near the signature, there is a line that runs parallel to the frame edge, and looks like it may be paint from the frame, but again, would require little restoration to remove it. It does not appear to be dated, but was likely painted in the 1860-1890 era, when Kauffmann was most active. This particular image of Venice is done with extremely fine detail, with subtle coloring that nicely portrays the soft and luminescent light for which Venice is so well known. Please see all photos for detail, and we have additional ones, should you wish to see more
