Luminous Interior Portrait CARLE BLENNER 1862-1952
SOLD - thank you!

Oil on canvas by Carle J. Blenner, the noted American artist, this interior portrait of a beautiful young woman seated before a window exemplifies his masterful usage of light; the sitter is bathed in the glow from the translucent curtains, and bright sunlight covers the flowers and field outside. The stretcher measures 12" by 16", in what appears to be the original gilded oak frame (18 3/4" by 23") In good condition, with craquelure evident over the canvas, a few tiny dots of paint loss, and some minor loss to frame. Signed in upper right corner, with label on verso. Additional photos are available upon request. Carle Blenner was born in Va, educated in Germany, graduated from Yale Art School, then studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, under W. A. Bouguereau, Robert-Fleury, and Aman-Jean, the important Salon artists of the era. Upon returning to the US, he opened a studio in New York City where he gained acclaim and prominence for his portraiture and still life paintings. Winner of many notable awards, he was a member of numerous art clubs, including the Salmagundi Club, and his works are found in important collections and museums. This is an exemplary painting by an important American portraitist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries
