| Raoul Viard (Haitian 1923-1991) is a highly respected, self-taught artist who excelled in developing his own impressionist style, utilizing a spatula with heavy impasto. He painted scenes of Haiti, including sea scapes, village and scenes of Port-au-Prince, but his strongest images are those of the Haitian countryside and the people of the area. This is a particularly large oil on stretched canvas, in what appears to be the original wood frame with white liner; the canvas measures 20" by 30" and the frame is 25 1/2" by 34 3/4". On the back it is titled "Expedition". Frame has some wear and scrapes to edges, and the canvas has a small tear (approximately 1" in each direction), that has been taped. (photos 4 and 5 show the front and back of tear). The image is vivid and strong, depicting four women carrying baskets and other items on their heads as they descend a road, alongside a fence, through trees, with mountains in the background. Though undated, it is likely from the 1960's. Paintings by Viard have sold worldwide, and are considered some of Haiti's finest. | ||
