Southwest Calendar ILA MCAFEE 1943 - Woodcut Prints
Ila McAfee (1897-1995) is an important American woman Western artist, whose works depict the history and landscape of the West, including Colorado, Texas, and Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She grew up on a ranch in Colorado and was fascinated with drawing and painting from an early age, often portraying horses, which were a significant part of her life. She studied in California, and also in New York, at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. With an interest in murals, she was a WPA artist and her works still remain in public buildings. Her paintings are highly desirable, and her auction record for a work is $33,000. This calendar was produced in 1943, and each month has an image created by her as a lino or woodblock print. Included are images of Native Americans, ranch life, Texas Longhorns, and of course, horses. In remarkably good condition, with some wear to the lower corners of the cover, each sheet is intact and clean. There are several photos of some of the months shown. A fine collection of this artist's crisp and detailed work, each sheet could be framed to create a lovely montage of her work.
