Ben Owen Master Potter - Large Frogskin Thumbprint Bowl
Ben Owen went to work for the Busbees at Jugtown pottery in 1923, and by 1932, became their sole potter and designer. Always fascinated by Oriental or Asian ceramics, Ben helped develop the glazes that became the fine art pottery of Jugtown. He left Jugtown when it was sold in 1959, and started his own studio, which existed from 1960 to 1972. This large bowl is representative of Ben Owen's fine skill as a potter, and exhibits a perfect example of the "frogskin" glaze, which varies in color, tone, and texture over the entire surface of the bowl. Measuring 8" in diameter, and 4 1/8" in height, it is beautiful from all directions, and the satiny finish enhances the subtle coloration in the glaze. In excellent condition, no chips or cracks, a very few minor abrasions in the bowl; the spots visible on the outside are slight indentations from the firing process. The scale and form of this bowl are wonderful, and should enhance any collection of Jugtown, Arts and Crafts, or other American Art Pottery.
