| From our personal collection, this mask was likely created in the mid to early 20th century, as we have owned it 25 years, and the previous owner had also owned it that long. It purportedly was carved by a known maker, but we no longer have the documentation; there are two sets of carved initials on the interior of the mask,"JV" which is large and deeply cut, and a smaller impression of the initials "dc". The glass eyes, open mouth with tongue, and carved lines on the face give this figure a great expression and impish personality. The glass eyes are made from heavy curved glass pieces and are painted with a bright blue, white, and a center black dot for the pupil. The mask measures 9" high, 6" wide, and approximately 5" from wall to tip of nose. Though not the most colorful or elaborate of ceremonial and festival masks from Mexico and Guatemala, this one conveys much energy, humor, and charm. | ||
